Why High School Musical?

Below is a letter written for the most recent news letter. I would love to hear other reactions. The fact is that this show is shaping up to be the best selling show of Civic Under The Stars history, but that is not why we decided to produce it.

Go ahead and read the letter, and let us know what you think about the show, the choice, everything.

I have been amazed to watch the different reactions people have had to our announcement several months ago that we would be doing Disney’s High School Musical. The largest response has been one of excitement and joy, strong early tickets sales echo that excitement. Then there is the other extreme, some people have had an almost physically negative reaction to the announcement. This reaction has puzzled me.

I understand that the show may not be for everyone, but then what show is? We do our best to balance every season, some musicals, some comedies, a classic and at least one drama. This is not an equation that we plug shows into, but a goal. the fact is you cannot please all the people all the time.

What HSM does though is open new doors. In the cast of HSM (42 cast members) there are several Civic newcomers. HSM has been called the “Grease of the new Millennium.” That does not mean that there will be a reality TV show to cast the next Troy and Gabriella…okay there is something like that in the works, but that is not the point. Grease brought a generation of young people into theatre. Young people who fell in love with Danny and Sandy flocked to the theatre, and a whole generation of theatre goers was created. By bringing the this hit TV movie to the stage, Disney has done the same thing, on an even larger scale. The massive popularity of HSM was immediately evident when we announced the show. For the first month we received daily calls asking when auditions where and when tickets would go on sale. In the first month of ticket sales we have sold more than ¼ of the available tickets, usually we would not hit that number until a few days before opening.

All that aside, the show is hot because it is good. It addresses universal themes and feelings, the story is well crafted, the music is good, all in all the show is just wonderful.

So, please, come and join us this summer. We are looking forward to several new patrons, and a wonderful time at the Amphitheatre. Tickets are selling fast, don’t forget that you can now purchase tickets 24 hours a day at www.lafayettecivic.org. Or of course you can still call the box office at 765-423-PLAY (7529). We look forward to seeing you at the theatre.
