Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette's 2008-2009 Staged Reading Series continues with Nickel and Dimed by Joan Holden, adapted from Barbara Ehrenreich's book Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America. It will be performed at the Monon Depot Theatre in downtown Lafayette on Tuesday, September 16, at 7 p.m. There will be a question-and-answer session immediately following the reading.

The script tells the story of Barbara, a journalist who travels across the United States to research the lives of the working poor, people who survive on the pay from low-wage jobs. The script dramatizes episodes of Barbara's experiences working as a waitress in Florida, a nursing home caretaker and a maid in Maine, and an associate at a large discount department store in Minnesota. Barbara undergoes the physical and emotional toll that her co-workers endure trying to survive day-by-day.

Melanie R. Buchanan directs the cast. Sherri Bundy, Steve Gooch, Cameron Johnston, Denise Laussade and Karen Schiler portray multiple roles. Laurie Russell plays Barbara.

Audience members are encouraged to pay what they can for admission. To learn more about Nickel and Dimed or the 2nd annual Staged Reading Series, call 765-423-PLAY (7529) or visit the Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette Web site.
