In the Wings: The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fair(l)y (Stoopid) Tales. Meet Sally Hale.

Sally Hale plays Cinderella and The Ugly Duckling in The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fair(l)y Stoopid Tales, a musical based on the book of the same name by Jon Scieszka. It is the final production of the 2008-2009 Civic Youth Theatre Season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette.

Sally said she read Scieszka's book before auditions.

"I love fractured fairy tales," she said. "I love comedy; it's the type of acting I'm attracted to."

Sally explained how working on a musical is different from working on a show without music.

"We warm-up by stretching and singing scales, and that gets us excited to rehearse," she said. "We then go through each song separately; if there's a chorus, there's harmony that the entire cast has rehearsed together. It sounds terrific when it is done on stage."

Sally concluded by describing the characters she plays.

"Cinderella is a clean freak," she said. "It's terrific fun because she gets to use all sorts of brooms and buckets. She likes everything exactly right and she doesn't settle for anything other than that. The Ugly Duckling is very shy and wants people to be friends with her, but no one will. She feels kind of let out, but she never gives up. She tries to make friends with everyone."

The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fair(l)y Stoopid Tales opens Friday, June 5 and runs through June 7. The Friday and Saturday evening shows begin at 7:00 p.m.; the Sunday afternoon show begins at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for youth.
