In the Wings: The Mousetrap. Meet David Dietz.
David Dietz plays Giles Ralston in The Mousetrap, the first production of the 2009-2010 MainStage Season of Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The script is by Agatha Christie.
David is very familiar with the play, having directed it with a theatre group in northwest Ohio. He also has seen different productions in London and Toronto.
"My wife and I were very involved with theatre in Ohio, then we moved to Kansas and didn't have an opportunity to do much theatre there as we started our family," David said. "We moved to Lafayette a few years ago, and we're getting involved with theatre again."
David explained that Giles and Mollie own Monkswell Manor, which she inherited from her aunt. They turned into a guest house.
"Giles spends most of Act I running up and down the stairs with luggage," he said. "He runs in and out, shovels coal, prepares the house for guests and keeps Mollie calm."
David concluded by suggesting what an audience may most remember from the production.
"The audience will definitely remember the twists and turns in the script. The fun part of watching this play or reading a book by Agatha Christie is trying to figure out 'who done it,'" he said. "The first time I saw this play in London, my mother asked me at intermission, 'Who do you think did it?' And I had no idea. The majority of clues come in Act II. One of my favorite parts of this show is hearing the audience's reaction when the murderer is revealed."
The Mousetrap runs three consecutive weekends from September 4-20 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre in downtown Lafayette. Shows on Friday and Saturday evenings begin at 8:00 p.m.; shows on Sunday afternoons begin at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for youth age 18 and under.
