In the Wings: A Christmas Story. Meet John David Collier, the director.

John David Collier directs A Christmas Story, the second production of the 2009-2010 MainStage season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The show is based on the movie of the same name.

John was interested in directing the show because he knows the movie and the story.

“The show is set in the late 1940s in Hohman, Indiana – which is based on Hammond," he said. "The Parkers are a working-class family with two kids. The play is all about Ralphie and his dream Christmas present: an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle.”

John said the play is slightly different than the movie, but that audiences still will see most of the movie scenes on stage.

"They audience will think, ‘Gosh, they got all the important things in that set on that stage with these local actors, and they did a great job,” he said.

A Christmas Story runs three consecutive weekends from Friday, December 4 to Sunday, December 20 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre in downtown Lafayette. There also are performances on Thursday, December 10 and December 17. Shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings begin at 8:00 p.m.; shows on Sunday afternoons begin at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for youth age 18 and under.
