In the Wings: A Christmas Story. Meet Michael Greenan.

Michael Greenan plays Ralph in A Christmas Story, the second production of the 2009-2010 MainStage season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The show is based on the movie of the same name.

Ralph is the adult version of Ralphie, played by Layton Laukins. In the movie the character is only a voiceover performed by author Jean Shepherd, upon whose books the movie is based. Michael explained the challenges of creating the character.

“I have to feel the emotional moments and become used to the rhythms of the language,” he said. “The script is written in a very specific style.”

Michael said the story is joyful and the young characters are adorable. He also said the stage version includes some things not included in the movie.

“There’s some romance between Ralphie and Esther Jane, and there’s more descriptive language too,” Michael said.

A Christmas Story runs three consecutive weekends from Friday, December 4 to Sunday, December 20 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre in downtown Lafayette. There also are performances on Thursday, December 10 and December 17. Shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings begin at 8:00 p.m.; shows on Sunday afternoons begin at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for youth age 18 and under.
