In the Wings: Cabaret. Meet Jaymes Osborne.

Jaymes Osborne plays the Emcee in Cabaret, the final production of the 2009-2010 MainStage season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The book is by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb.

Jaymes said the Emcee is difficult to describe, although he suggested the character may be considered a mirror.

"The Emcee welcomes the audience to the Kit Kat Club and draws them into the action at the start," he said. "But then he becomes an observer: he sees everything that goes on in the club and he narrates about the other characters throughout the show."

Jaymes said Cabaret offers a great balance in tone for the audience.

"The story about the rise of the Third Reich is very dramatic and heavy, but there also is a lot of comedy and dancing in the show," he said. "The audience will walk away from a performance of the show with a lot of memorable moments."

Cabaret runs three consecutive weekends from Friday, May 7 through Sunday, May 23 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre in downtown Lafayette. Friday and Saturday evening shows begin at 8:00 p.m.; the Sunday afternoon matinees begin at 2:30 p.m. There also will be a performance Thursday, May 20 beginning at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for adults are $15; tickets for youth age 18 and under are $10.
