In the Wings: Cabaret. Meet Julia Colby.

Julia Colby plays Sally Bowles in Cabaret, the final production of the 2009-2010 MainStage season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The book is by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb.

Julia auditioned for the show because she had enjoyed watching other Civic productions directed by Kate Walker and wanted the opportunity to work with her.

"I also auditioned becaues Cabaret has been one of my favorite shows for a long time," she said. "Sally is such a gem of a role and she can be portrayed in so many ways."

Julia said Sally is the headliner at the Kit Kat Club, and is full of life and vitality even as Berlin struggles to recover after the Great War.

"Sally meets Cliff Bradshaw and is interested in him," Julia said. "When she tries to interact with him, he 'gets' her from the start. That startles her and breaks her fa├žade. She casually tiptoes into a relationship with him."

Julia concluded by suggesting what the audience will remember about a performance of the show.

"The story is fabulous and the production is shaping up to be really fantastic," she said. "The audience will enjoy all the production elements: the lighting, the set direction and the costumes. And the talent in this cast is just phenomenal."

Cabaret runs three consecutive weekends from Friday, May 7 through Sunday, May 23 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre in downtown Lafayette. Friday and Saturday evening shows begin at 8:00 p.m.; Sunday afternoon matinees begin at 2:30 p.m. There also will be a performance Thursday, May 20 starting at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for adults are $15; tickets for youth age 18 and under are $10.
