In the Wings: Enter Love: A Musical for Our Times. Meet Deborah Fights.

Deborah Fights plays Amy in Enter Love: A Musical for Our Times, an original musical with music and lyrics by Lynn Lupold and book by Don Seybold. It will make its world premiere at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette.

Deborah decided to audition for the show after seeing a notice on a website because she had worked with or knew several members of the creative team including Lynn Lupold, Eric VanCleave and director Kenny Shepard.

"I auditioned for the show, having known these people, because I thought it would be a lot of fun," she said.

Deborah described Amy as a young, flirtatious and single flight attendant.

"Amy started off as a flight attendant because she saw it as being romantic and adventurous. Now that she's done it for 10 years, she is a little wary of it," Deborah said. "She still likes it because she has great benefits and she gets to travel internationally, but it's starting to wear on her and her relationships. She would like to find that perfect relationship for herself."

Deborah explained how rehearsing a musical that has never been produced before can be both challenging and exciting.

"Things change every day. Every time you come into rehearsal there has been something added or taken out to make the story more fluid," she said. "But that's also a perk because you don't usually get to see the development process when you're rehearsing a musical."

Deborah concluded by suggesting what an audience will most remember after seeing a performance of Enter Love: A Musical for Our Times.

"They will take away how realistic a lot of the show is," she said. "Relationships aren't just 'Girl meets boy, girl falls in love with boy and they get married to live happily every after.' The show is realistic and shows that there isn't always a happy ending, that people get confused and things are complicated."

Enter Love: A Musical for Our Times opens Friday, August 13 and runs through Saturday, August 21 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre at the corner of 5th Street and North Street in downtown Lafayette. Friday and Saturday evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday afternoon performances begin at 2:30 p.m.
