In the Wings: Enter Love: A Musical for Our Times. Meet Jennifer Montgomery.
Jennifer Montgomery plays Samantha in Enter Love: A Musical for Our Times, an original musical with music and lyrics by Lynn Lupold and book by Don Seybold. It will make its world premiere at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette.
Jennifer auditioned for the show because of the people involved.
"When I found out that Eric Van Cleave, Lynn and Don were involved with the show, I knew it would be really good because their reputations precede them," she said. "I had never worked with them but I knew they were really talented and I would learn a lot and grow as a performer.
"The other thing that drew me is that the show is a new musical. There are no preconceived notions of what the characters represent or physically look like. It is completely a new universe. It's a challenge because you are creating that character for the first time."
Jennifer said Samantha is a 30-something flight attendant in a relationship with Kate, who is embarking on her first relationship with another woman.
"Samantha wants to be loved, which is pretty much what everyone wants," Jennifer said. "She still has a trust issue and some jealousy issues because when they run into Ben, Kate's ex, in the airport, her insecurities surface."
Jennifer concluded by suggesting what audiences will remember most about Enter Love: A Musical for Our Times.
"There are really catchy tunes. A friend of mine said you've got a good musical when you have one of the songs stuck in your head. That's definitely the case here," she said. "It also leaves you feeling reassured that things will probably turn out okay. As long as you believe in yourself, things are going to work out."
Enter Love: A Musical for Our Times opens Friday, August 13 and runs through Saturday, August 21 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre at the corner of 5th Street and North Street in downtown Lafayette. Friday and Saturday evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday afternoon performances begin at 2:30 p.m.
