In the Wings: Enter Love: A Musical for Our Times. Meet Kathy Carter.
Kathy Carter plays Missy in Enter Love: A Musical for Our Times, an original musical with music and lyrics by Lynn Lupold and book by Don Seybold. It will make its world premiere at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette.
Kathy sang several of the songs during a cabaret performance at the Connoisseur Room in Indianapolis before the musical was developed.
"I've known Lynn for years and am friends with her in Indianapolis," she said. "Two years ago she mentioned that she writes music, and I had no idea. And I told her that I sing, and she had no idea. So I went to her house and sang her music. After the cabaret, I was encouraged to audition for Enter Love and I'm thrilled to death to be part of it.
"Lynn writes from her heart and her experiences. The words she uses and the way she develops phrases have a lot of meaning. And Don's dialogue is like people really talking to each other, it doesn't feel like made-up conversations."
Kathy described Missy as experienced and complex.
"Missy has had a rough go of it," she said. "She has never been married. She's a former showgirl, former actress and former model, and now she is a businesswoman. She is a bit tained, but still vulnerable and hopeful. She is looking for love and very aware of the men around her."
Kathy suggested what the musical's subtitle means.
"Although it's on stage and we'll be wearing make-up and we've got directions to hit a certain mark and breathe at certain points, this story and music is about everyday life. It's about our times," she said. "It's about trying to survive this life and find comfort and some measure of joy through love."
Enter Love: A Musical for Our Times opens Friday, August 13 and runs through Saturday, August 21 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre at the corner of 5th Street and North Street in downtown Lafayette.
