In the Wings: The Taffetas. Meet Sydney Cason.
Sydney Cason plays Kaye in The Taffetas, the first production in the 2010-2011 MainStage Season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The musical was conceived by Rick Lewis, with additional material by Arthur Whitelaw. Melanie R. Buchanan is the director and Shellie Johnson is the musical director.
Question: What sets Kaye apart from her three sisters?
Sydney Cason: Kaye is the oldest sister and she is rather bossy. She takes charge when the others are being silly. She talks a lot more than the others because she is very bossy in general.
Q: Why did you audition for The Taffetas?
S.C.: I love harmony and hearing the different parts together. 1950s barbership has the best harmonies there are. I wanted to be part of that.
Q: How much did you know about 1950s girls groups before you auditioned?
S.C.: I knew some songs from that time, but I've learned a lot of new songs during rehearsals. I only knew about a quarter of the songs before.
Q: What has been the most enjoyable part about rehearsal?
S.C.: Since there are only four of us acting and singing, it's been fun to bond with the other girls. We get along really well and we're building a sisterhood ourselves.
Q: What is your favorite song in the show?
S.C.: My favorite song is "Shaboom." It opens the show and it's my solo, but we all dance together and sing together. It's really fun.
Q: Have you ever worn taffeta?
S.C.: I have not worn taffeta before. I'm a little nervous about the plastic material under the stage lights.
The Taffetas opens Friday, September 10 and runs three consecutive weekends through Sunday, September 26 at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette at the corner of 5th Street and North Street in downtown Lafayette. Friday and Saturday evening shows begin at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday afternoon performances begin at 2:30 p.m. There also will be a show Thursday, September 23 at 7:30 p.m.
