In the Wings: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Meet Steve Koehler.

Steve Koehler directs The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, the holiday show in the 2010-2011 season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The script is by Barbara Robinson.

Question: Why did you want to direct The Best Christmas Pageant Ever?
Steve Koehler: I love this show. I've done this show several times in different roles, mostly as a sound designer. I'm very close to it: it's a very warm story. In a lot of ways, it exemplifies what the holidays mean to me.

Q: What are the circumstances when the story begins?
S.K.: The story begins mid-November. We meet Beth Bradley, played by Tori Rosa, who narrates the story of what happens when the Herdmans, who are the town bullies, take over the parts of the Christmas pageant.

Q: What will an audience take away from seeing The Best Christmas Pageant Ever?
S.K.: They'll have a good time, but there also are lots of warm feelings. You get a feeling of what I think the holidays are supposed to mean: caring about others and not judging a book by its cover.

Q: Were you ever in a Christmas pageant?
S.K.: Yes, I was. I was a reindeer in one and I played a narrator in another.

Q: What is the silliest Christmas memory you have?
S.K.: When my James, my son, was two years old, we had the Christmas tree up and decorated in early December. His grandmother was visiting and James was looking at the presents. He was about to rip into one and she said, "James, you have to wait. It's not Christmas yet." He sat on the floor and put his arms in his lap and just waited. And Christmas was still two weeks away, but he was going ot wait.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever will open Friday, December 3 and run three consecutive weekends through Sunday, December 19 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre at the corner of 5th Street and North Street in downtown Lafayette. Friday and Saturday evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday afternoon performances will begin at 2:30 p.m. There also will be a performance Thursday, December 9.
