In the Wings: Tuesdays with Morrie. Meet Mark Allen Carter

Mark Allen Carter plays Mitch Albom in Tuesdays with Morrie, the second show in the 2010-2011 MainStage Season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The script is by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom, based on Albom's book of the same name. Tuesdays with Morrie is directed by Thea Strand.

Q: What made you want to be a part of this play?
M.C.: I read the book. That's the first thing. I just found the book so compelling that I read it in one sitting. The book is fabulous and that really made me want to be a part of it.

Q: What about your character is unusual?
M.C.: There are so many layers to Mitch. He's very complex. He looks at his friend who's dying and decides, "It's time to get my life in order." He does a complete 180 and decides to become more of a driver. He is looking for some happiness in his life and some type of peace. He's trying to find some kind of form to what his life should be about. Morrie is able to provide that for him.

Q: What do you bring to this character?
M.C.: I bring a lot of experience to this role -- and not just theatrical experience. But I come to this role with the life experience that helps me in the role.

Q: What do you hope the audience will take away from seeing this play?
M.C.: Morrie says a lot in this play and I hope the audience listens. Mostly, I hope they hear him say "live life to the fullest." That is the key.

Tuesdays with Morrie will open Friday, November 5 and run three consecutive weekends through Sunday, November 21 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre at the corner of 5th Street and North Street in downtown Lafayette. Friday and Saturday evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday afternoon performances will begin at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for youth age 18 and under.
