In the Wings: The Velveteen Rabbit. Meet Sherri Bundy, the co-director.

Sherri Bundy is co-director, along with Renee Cason, for The Velveteen Rabbit, the fourth and final production of the 2010-2011 Civic Youth Theatre season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The script is by local playwright Laurie Russell based on the book by Margery Williams.

Question: Why were you interested in directing The Velveteen Rabbit?
Sherri Bundy: I became interested in directing The Velveteen Rabbit because I've been involved in so many Civic Youth Theatre productions in various capacities. I thought it would be great to take it from start to finish and have more say in every aspect of the production. It's a fun play and it offers a lot of chance for the actors to use their imaginations.

Q: When and where does the story take place?
S.B.: The story is set in the 1920s, which is important because the characters have to face scarlet fever. The bunny in the story is going to be tossed aside because it supposedly is carrying germs. They have to burn everything the child has been exposed to so the disease isn't passed on.

Q: How have rehearsals gone with a cast that is so large and also is diverse with such a range of ages, six to seventeen?
S.B.: At first I was concerned because it is a wide range of ages. I thought it would be a challenge to keep them entertained and attentive for long periods of time. But the kids have been excellent. The older kids have helped the younger kids a lot, even if the older kids are newer to theatre. And I think they've all had a lot of fun.

Q: What do you think an audience will most remember about this production of The Velveteen Rabbit?
S.B.: I think they'll most remember the enthusiasm and the imagination of the actors in their portrayals of the toys. We asked them to come up with ideas on their own about what a particular toy would act like, would talk like. And it could be anything because it's an imaginary figure. I'm really impressed with what they've come up with, and I think the audience will be impressed too.

The Velveteen Rabbit opens Friday, April 22 and will run through Sunday, April 24 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre at the corner of 5th Street and North Street in downtown Lafayette.
