In the Wings: Little Shop of Horrors. Meet Chris Allen.
Chris Allen provides the voice for Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors, the fifth and final production of the 2010-2011 MainStage season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The book and lyrics are by Howard Ashman and the music is by Alan Menken.
Question: Why did you want to be involved with Little Shop of Horrors?
Chris Allen: I watched the movie when I was 10 or 12, and I thought it was a hysterical show. It was making fun of every single movie back then.
Q: What is Audrey II like?
C.A.: Seymour buys Audrey II from an old Chinese man. Audrey II grows from a tiny little pod, and the only way it grows is by Seymour feeding it his blood. Audrey II continues to grow and grow, and then starts to talk. That's when Seymour realizes things aren't as normal as he thought.
Q: How are rehearsals going? What is it like working with Chris Mayfield, the puppeteer for Audrey II?
C.A.: Rehearsals are going fantastic, although I was a little worried at first. I thought it was going to be one of the hardest things I've ever done. But Chris knows what my voice is going to do, he thinks how I think and he knows how I am going to perform the music. The hard part is that I have to be repetitive with riffs and runs and R&B sounds because Chris has to develop muscle memory for those moves.
Q: What will an audience most remember about this show?
C.A.: They will enjoy the completely epic singers we have. Every single person in this show has a phenomenal voice.
Little Shop of Horrors will open Friday, May 13 and run three consecutive weekends through Sunday, May 29 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre at the corner of 5th Street and North Street in downtown Lafayette. Friday and Saturday evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday afternoon performances will begin at 2:30 p.m.
