In the Wings: Rent. Meet Dejuan Jackson.
Dejuan Jackson plays Tom Collins in RENT, the first production of the 2011-2012 season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The book, music and lyrics are by Jonathan Larson, based on Giacomo Puccini's La bohème.
Question: Why did you want to be part of RENT?
Dejuan Jackson: I had seen the movie as well as the Broadway show. I had no clue that the musical was happening in Lafayette. I was at work at Willowbrook West Apartments and Kate Walker came up to me and asked, "Do you sing and dance?" She convinced me to audition. I would have never known if it wasn't for her.
Q: How would you describe Tom Collins?
D.J.: Collins is laidback, he is very caring and he is nomadic. He left MIT and is at his friends' apartment in New York. He just got expelled and is returning to a home base. He meets Angel and is open to the possibilities because that's who he is: he's open to things.
Q: What do you think an audience will most remember about a performance of RENT?
A.R.: The show is called RENT and it's basically about rented time. You need to live every day to its fullest and to its best because you never know when you're not going to have it. That's what I'm getting from it and I think that's what people will get from it: You have to love your loved ones while they're there, treat everyone with respect because everything is temporary.
RENT will open Thursday, July 14 and run through July 16 at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater, 4449 ST RD 43 N, West Lafayette. Sunday, July 17 has been scheduled as a performance date if there are any rain outs. Performances begin at 9:00 p.m.
