In the Wings: Rent. Meet Jeff Spanke.
Jeff Spanke plays Roger in RENT, the first production of the 2011-2012 season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The book, music and lyrics are by Jonathan Larson, based on Giacomo Puccini's La bohème.
Question: Why did you want to be part of RENT?
Jeff Spanke: There were several reasons. I'd never done a summer show, I'd never done a show at the Amphitheater. I had worked with Julia Colby before, but never in a director-actor capacity. All those things appealed to me and the timing could not have been better. I've always loved the music in this show. I think it's a fun show and being in this would allow a different opportunity than most conventional Broadway musicals.
Q: How would you describe Roger?
J.S.: Roger is confused and ambitious, angsty and lethargic, misanthropic, precocious, pretentious and scared. His goal is to regain some remnants of his past glory found in music, on the surface. On a deeper level, his goal is to regain the glory found in his past life as a person and artist.
Q: What do you think an audience will most remember about a performance of RENT?
J.S.: I don't anticipate a lot people will think of this as a community theater show. I think the simple fact that Civic Theatre has done RENT, has done it well and has maintained the integrity, I think that's what people will take that away. The simple fact that we've done it and done it well is something people will appreciate.
RENT will open Thursday, July 14 and run through July 16 at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater, 4449 ST RD 43 N, West Lafayette. Sunday, July 17 has been scheduled as a performance date if there are any rain outs. Performances begin at 9:00 p.m.
