Announcing auditions for Tartuffe

Director Jeff Spanke has announced auditions for Tartuffe, the fifth production of the 2011-2012 MainStage season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette.

Auditions will be held Sunday, March 4 and Monday, March 5 from 7-9 p.m. in the Civic Theatre office at 313 N. 5th Street in downtown Lafayette.

Those auditioning will be asked to prepare a one-minute comedic monologue and also to read from the script. To sign up for an appointment, call 765-423-PLAY (7529).

The director seeks men and women of all ages for the following roles:

Orgon, husband to Elmire.
Damis, his son.
Valère, Mariane's lover.
Cléante, Orgon's brother-in-law.
M. Loyal, a tipstaff.
A Police Officer.
Elmire, Orgon's wife.
Madame Pernelle, Orgon's mother.
Mariane, Orgon's daughter.
Dorine, her maid.
Flipote, Madame Pernelle's servant.

Orgon's family is up in arms because Orgon and his mother have fallen under the influence of Tartuffe, a pious fraud (and a vagrant prior to Orgon's help). Tartuffe pretends to be pious and to speak with divine authority, and Orgon and his mother no longer take any action without first consulting him.

The rest of the family and their friends are not fooled by Tartuffe's antics and detest him. The stakes are raised when Orgon announces that he will marry Tartuffe to his daughter Mariane (already engaged to Valère). Mariane is, of course, very upset at this news and the rest of the family realizes how deeply Tartuffe has embedded himself into the family.

Tartuffe will open Friday, May 11 and run through Sunday, May 27 in the historic Monon Depot Theatre. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday performances begin at 2:30 p.m.

For more information about the show or to order tickets, call Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette at 765-423-PLAY (7529) or visit its website.
