In the Wings: Pride and Prejudice. Meet Malena de la Fuente.

Malena de la Fuente plays Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, the third show of the 2011-2012 Civic Youth Theatre season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The script is by Jon Jory based on the novel by Jane Austen.

Question: Why did you audition for Pride and Prejudice? Did you know the novel before you auditioned?
Malena de la Fuente: I read the book several times; it's one of my favorites. I auditioned because I'm a senior and I wanted to be in one last play, to be on stage one last time before I go to college.

Q: How would you describe Elizabeth?
M.F.: She's really fun, really independent - she likes to do her own thing. She loves to laugh and criticize people, but in a good way. She always likes to be in control of a situation. She has to learn to get over her prejudices and learn to accept people for who they are and not judge them on first impressions.

Q: What's fun about playing Elizabeth?
M.F.: I have to go through so many different emotions, it's a lot of fun: I'm happy, I'm sad, I'm angry, I'm upset, I'm in love, I hate people, I'm annoyed by people. I love doing all that because it's so volatile in some parts.

Q: What do you think an audience will enjoy most about the show?
M.F.: I think they'll enjoy being able to relate to all the stories, but also seeing them in a different time period.

Q: Do you believe in love at first sight?
M.F.: I think I believe in love at first sight, but you can fall in love without having that.

Pride and Prejudice opens Friday, March 30 and runs through Sunday, April 1 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre at the corner of 5th Street and North Street in downtown Lafayette.

Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday shows begin at 2:30 p.m. For more information about the show or to order tickets, call 765-423-PLAY (7529) or visit Civic Theatre's website.
