In the Wings: Young Directors Project - Jumping. Meet Cody Walker.

Cody Walker directs Jumping, one of the shows in Young Directors Project, the fourth and final production of the 2011-2012 Civic Youth Theatre season at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. The script is by William Borden.

Question: Where and when is the show set? Who are the characters?
Cody Walker: It's set in modern day Minnesota on bridge in the middle of winter. The characters are Denise and Jerry. Denise is very politically involved, and Jerry is about to jump off the bridge because something happened with his girlfriend.

Q: How long have you wanted to be a director?
C.W.: I've wanted to be a director since the first show I was in six years ago, Thornton Wilder's The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden.

Q: Why did you want to be a director?
C.W.: I wanted to see what went on behind the scenes and to tell people what to do.

Q: What do you think the most important part of being a director is?
C.W.: It's making sure you keep your vision and make sure the show looks how you want, and that people like it.

Q: Who is your mentor and what are you learning from her?
C.W.: My mentor is Laura Mecsey. I'm learning how to block scenes better.

Q: What do you think people will most enjoy about the show?
C.W.: There are a lot of funny parts in it, especially the banter between the characters.

Young Directors Project opens Friday, April 20 and runs through Sunday, April 22 at the historic Monon Depot Theatre at the corner of 5th Street and North Street in downtown Lafayette.

Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday shows begin at 2:30 p.m. For more information about the show or to order tickets, call 765-423-PLAY (7529) or visit Civic Theatre's website.
