Nelson Tilley plays Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, the first of two summer productions from Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette in 2012. The music and lyrics are by Frank Loesser; the book is by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. Next year Nelson will be a senior at McCutcheon High School.
Question: Why did you want to be part of Guys and Dolls?
Nelson Tilley: The main reason is that I've never seen Guys and Dolls before, but I had heard great things about it. I also heard Laura Mecsey was directing, and I had not yet had the opportunity to work with her. She is a fantastic director. I've also never done a show at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater.
Q: What will an audience enjoy about the show?
N.T.: The audience is going to enjoy the high energy in the show. There are so many fun songs, and they'll be singing along and tapping their toes. Laura's done a great job directing and Grace Lazarz has created fun choreography. It's just a fun show.
Q: In real life, are you more like a Save-a-Soul person, or are you a gangster?
N.T.: In real life I'm completely a member of the Save-a-Soul mission, although I do play Texas Hold 'Em every now and then.
Guys and Dolls will run July 20 and 21 at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater Park, 4449 State Road 43 North, West Lafayette. The shows begin at 7:30 p.m.
