Director Steve Martin has announced audition information for To Tread Among Serpents, the fifth staged reading in the 2013-2014 Staged Reading Series at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. Kelly McBurnette-Andronicos wrote the script, which will receive its world premiere.
Deep in 1959 Southern Appalachia, Pentecostal snake handler and pig farmer Violet Haight is eager to talk about how she butchered and scattered the hacked-up remains of two men over 75 miles of country roads, as long as the ambitious urbanite reporter and crime writer Juanita "JC" Cohen is able to satisfy Violet's desire for celebrity and appetite for vengeance. To Tread Among Serpents is based on a true story.
Auditions will be Monday, February 17 from 7-9 p.m. in the Civic Theatre office, 313 N. 5th Street in downtown Lafayette. Those auditioning will be asked to read from the script; they are asked to arrive as close to 7 p.m. as possible. Please bring a calendar to note availability for rehearsals as well as conflicts.
Steve seeks to cast three (3) women and one (1) man for the following roles:
* Janitor, cleans the jail, 40-50 years old, African American female
* Jasper "Junior" Scroggins, a small-town sheriff, 35-50 years old, white male
* Juanita "JC" Cohen, a New York-based reporter, 35-45 years old, white female
* Violet Haight, a pig farmer and murder suspect, 30-40 years old, white female
* Lulu Lemoine, a West Coast-based attorney, 35-45 years old, African American female, played by the actor playing the Janitor
Steve also seeks to cast three to five adult men and women for voices of other inmates, the media, worshipers, the judge, jurors and radio announcers.
The staged reading of To Tread Among Serpents will be Tuesday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Monon Depot Theatre, 320 N. 5th Street in downtown Lafayette. It is a Pay What You Can event.
There will be a question-and-answer session immediately following the staged reading between the audience, the cast, the director and the playwright.
