Question: Who is Fagin and what is he like?
Craig Martin: Fagin is trying to stay alive. He's a crafty fellow who has found a way to get by using young kids to thieve for him, but in a semi-innocent way. He provides a better home for them than they might find on the streets. He's looking to maintain and maybe find a better course for his life.
Q: What do you like about Fagin?
C.M.: He's full of life and energy, and all of the foibles of mankind. He knows he's doing the wrong thing at certain times, yet he revels in it. He takes adventure from it and finds it interesting and fun, yet he also feels guilty for what he's done. He struggles throughout the show to do the right thing or to do what gets him by.
Q: What do you wish audiences knew about the rehearsals for the show?
C.M.: It's painstaking and takes time to play everything out, but it's a lot of fun to take energy from these younger performers.
Q: "Oliver!" is based on Charles Dickens' novel. What novel do you wish were made into a musical?
C.M.: "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving. It's very Dickensian and there are a lot of bizarre features and elements. It would take a really creative, wild mind to pull it off.
